YMCA Space Youth & Community Centre
One of the darkest buildings in the town centre
(Edward the Confessor) has been transformed into
one of the lightest as the YMCA Youth and
Community Centre. It is now open and
they are looking for volunteers. If you are
interested contact the Interim Centre Manager

Typically YMCA
Space provides a safe place for young people who
usually “hang around the streets”. The centre
will be available throughout the day, including
a drop-in after-school youth café in the
afternoons and evenings. Young people will have
opportunities to engage in positive activities
reducing their risk of harm or antisocial
behaviour. Relevant information is available,
either by co-located services or through
referrals, working with PCSOs, Youth Connexions,
drug, alcohol and sexual health advisors, and
other community organisations. The friendly and
free environment of YMCA Space enables the more
vulnerable of our society eg. those experiencing
loneliness, mental health issues, low
self-esteem or lack of aspiration, to integrate
with the wider community and become more
confident. To date, regular Space programmes at
other Space Centres have included a young
parent's toddler group, listening service for
those affected by loss, friendship groups, a
beginner's computer class, as well as hosting
other agencies such as Hertsavers Credit Union.
YMCA Space
provides an exciting opportunity for the
churches to work together, serve their community
and bring God’s love to the town centre.
Churches form an integral part of the Steering
Group, along side the centre’s staff, to
determine the direction of travel, promote good
communications and volunteering opportunities,
and pray for the project.
